在演讲中，演讲者为了充分发挥眼神交流的感染力，他们一面看着演讲稿，一面看着他的听众，成功的演讲者认为目光是最好的交流。失败的演讲者大都只是念讲稿，而眼睛不看听众，这样的演说是枯燥无味的。
西方国家的人向中国人演讲时，即使距离很远，在他扫视听众、观察其反应时也会发现中国人避开眼神的交流，所以反馈往往令人扫兴。西方国家的听众在报告人扫视会场时，就会以目相迎，表示他们一直在全神贯注地听讲。
中国人回避眼神交流的另一个原因是表示尊敬演讲人，但西方人所得到的印象却是对方在拒而不听，对演说的内容不感兴趣。中国的演说者与听众相互谦恭地回避眼神交流，这让西方人感到不可理解。同时，一个回避目光与听众接触的演说者，这样的行为会让听众感到受到了忽视，也会对演说者的演讲失去兴趣，甚至还会蔑视演说者本人，认为：“他个别羞怯”。
东方和西方的国情环境也有差别，西方人在演讲前，听众希望演讲人必须具有演讲的具体条件；中国人则认为具体陈述自己的资格是自我吹嘘的表现。按照中国人自谦的规范，演讲的态度应是谦逊地施礼，并要为占用了听众的时间而表示歉意。西方人在演讲开始时，可能会讲这一报告是他数年来精心研究的成果；中国演讲者则可能对他要讲的题目所知甚少，但是应朋友之邀不能不讲。从这种情况就可以得出中国人的演讲为什么没有目光的交流，因为他无法来炫耀自己的长处，总是把自己的长处说成自己的短处。
