An overview of logical transformation techniques and physical evaluation methods for database queries was given, using the framework of the relational calculus. It was shown that a large body of knowledge has been developed to solve the problem of processing queries efficiently in conventional centralized and distributed database systems.Query optimization research is still an active field. Promising directions include the development of simple yet realistic cost estimates, the optimization of queries on databases with deductive or computational capabilities, and the simultaneous optimization of multiple queries and update transactions.
