在交友上，纳兰性德最突出的特点是其所交“皆一时俊异，于世所称落落难合者”，这些不肯悦俗之人，多为江南汉族布衣文人，如顾贞观、严绳孙、朱彝尊、陈维崧、姜宸英等等。纳兰性德对朋友极为真诚，不仅仗义疏财，而且敬重他们的品格和才华，就象平原君食客三千一样，当时许多的名士才子都围绕在他身边，使得其住所渌水亭因文人骚客雅聚而著名，客观上也促进（现宋庆龄故居内恩波亭）了康乾盛世的文化繁荣。究其原因，纳兰性德在一定程度上可以和汉族知识分子学到他所倾慕的汉文化知识，而更重要的是他自身有着不同于一般满清贵族纨绔子弟的远大理想和高尚人格，这就显然使得他的举动背离了社会主流，从而成为后世的一个研究焦点。
1674年，纳兰性德二十岁时，娶两广总督卢兴祖之女为妻，赐淑人。是年卢氏年方十八，“生而婉娈，性本端庄”。成婚后，二人夫妻恩爱，感情笃深，新婚美满生活激发他的诗 词创作。但是仅三年，卢氏因产后受寒而亡，这给纳兰性德造成极大痛苦，从此“悼亡之吟不少，知己之恨尤深”。沉重的精神打击使他在以后的悼亡诗词中一再流露出哀惋凄楚的不尽相思之情和怅然若失的怀念心绪。纳兰性德后又续娶关氏，并有侧室颜氏。 值得一提的是，纳兰性德三十岁时，在好友顾贞观的帮助下，纳江南才女沈宛。沈宛，字御蝉，浙江乌程人，著有《选梦词》。集中悼亡之作“丰神不减夫婿”。可惜她在与纳兰性德相处一年之后，纳兰性德就去世了，这段短暂的爱情又以悲剧告终。
