In the pages which follow I have tired to trace the parallel course of events of the Disarmament Conference and the national revival in Germany to the point where they finally clashed. In doing so I have been fortunate in having the help and criticism of a number of my friends. First I must express my very real gratitude to Miss Muriel Currey for her great assistance throughout the work of writing the book, and particularly in the preparation of the chapter concerning the negotiation of the Four-Power Pact.
