目前，国内在工程实践中应用的埋弧自动焊单面焊双面成形工艺都采用的是焊缝强制成形的方法，这种方法主要有两大类：一类是用焊剂衬垫，包括焊剂—气垫、硬焊剂衬垫、固化焊剂衬垫等；另一类是用铜衬垫及焊剂—铜组合衬垫。这两大类方法一般都是先将衬垫贴在或用机械的方法固定于焊缝下方，以防止在焊接过程中融化了的金属从焊缝流出，所以一般焊缝有多长垫片就得贴多长，而且一般的焊接衬垫只能使用一次，不能重复使用。
本文主要介绍了一种自动焊背面成型机的设计，即一种可以实现跟随焊枪同步移动的垫片小车。文章在查阅大量国内资料及总结前人工作的基础上，结合同步跟踪技术在控制上的应用，将温度传感器引入到自动焊背面成型系统中，研制出了新型的能跟随焊枪同步移动的垫片小车。
在研究中，提出了熔池液面位置复合控制的思想，复合控制中的检测信号包括温度传感信号和电弧电压或电流检测信号，其中温度传感信号作为自动焊背面成型熔池液面位置控制的主要检测信号。综合考虑系统中各种影响因素，研制了相应的信号检测和小车速度自动调节系统。
本文还涉及到了新型的焊接参数显示系统，可以显示电压，电流和焊接速度。系统研制中采用了变结构控制方式，实现了参数预置和实时检测。
相关实验证明 ，采用温度传感、电弧电压或电流检测的复合控制能够满足焊接过程小车自动跟踪控制的需要。本文研制的自动焊背面成型机垫片小车具有良好的可靠性和实用性。该项研究必将大大提高焊接效率，降低焊接成本，促进高效自动焊接的应用和发展。
