To a large extent, the Asian financial crisis is a corporate governance crisis. This was particularly so in Korea, where a series of bankruptcies of large business groups, called chaebols, was mainly responsible for the triggering of the crisis. The mismanagement of foreign exchange assets and liabilities was another critical factor for the loss of confidence in the Asian economies. However, even with substantial improvement in their liquidity conditions, these economies are hardly out of the trouble, indicating the seriousness and tenacity of the structural weaknesses in these economies (Nam, 2001).
