相当于they may find the morld is now smaller than (the world )before,是个定语修饰the world,英语习惯前面提到的东西后面省略

before就是以前啊，从前的意思,

其实是这样子，原句完整形式为
they may find the morld is now smaller than ( it was )before.

可以看成省略了the world，如果在before前添上the world，就可以看出来before 是个后置定语

they may find the world is now smaller than before才对吧...好象单词你写错了。 ..
before,这个地方不是介词“在。。。前”
而是时间副词“从前，以前”

“他们发现世界比以前更小了。。。”
