In an interview Krakauer gave about his experience in 1996 on Everest, he said, "We should think of Everest not as a mountain,but as the geologic embodiment of myth. " What do you think he means by that statement? In what way is Everest a "chunk of myth"?

by that statement he means that the the Everest is not a normal mountain , but a wonder of the nature.
the Everest is a "chunk of myth" in the way of its height,its make-ups and its vitality.

1 他说Everest（珠穆朗玛峰)不只是一座山峰，应该说是地理（质）学上的一个奇迹。

2 珠穆朗玛峰面积大，是由不同的小山峰组成的一个奇迹。

就是说,Everest是大自然的神奇。赋有一定的生命力，不仅仅可以用简简单单的mountain来形容了。

我觉得本身若在面试的环境下，问的问题肯定有一定的“目的”在里面，我的理解是：任何伟大的人或事物，都不是一蹴而就的，必然经过长期不懈的努力逐渐积累形成的，比如珠穆朗玛峰，表面看是一座雄伟高大的山峰，不是每个人都能攀登的高度，它也是若干年来通过地质不断变化慢慢形成的。我们要有这种向上攀登的精神，但也是辛勤努力才能获得的。
