纵观电视的发展，可归纳为三个阶段：机械黑白电视、电子黑白电视、电子彩色电视。
机械黑白电视阶段
1848年，意大利的卡赛里发明了化学电传真系统，率先实现了用电的方法在阿米昂与巴黎之间进行远距离传送画面的奇迹。随后，电话的发明、硒光敏特性的发现都是进行电视研究的最早启蒙。各国科学家们迫不及待的想实现“用电的方法看到远处活动景象的愿望”。1884年，尼泼科夫首先取得了机械电视用扫描盘发明专利。此后，光电管、阴极射线管、真空二极管、三极管的发明为电视的诞生奠定了坚实的基础。
1920－1930年间，许多科学家提出并实验了用机械扫描方法实现图象信号的发送与接收的方案。故称此时为“机械黑白电视阶段”。在机械电视的研制方面，做出卓越贡献的是英国的贝尔德，他建立了世界上第一个专门研究机械黑白电视的实验室。他用简陋的设备组装成了世界上第一套电视发射机和接收机，并于1925年10月25日终于获得了电视传送的第一张真人图片，也就诞生了世界上第一台机械黑白电视机。
电子电视的兴起
从20世纪20－30年代，机械电视研究的同时，电子技术也开始迅猛的发展。美籍俄国科学家弗拉基米尔·科斯马·佐利金在这方面做出了重大贡献。他在1929年，试制成功了电子电视系统和电视显像管。1931年，又研制成功了电子摄像管，并于1933年取得了光电摄像管的专利。在此期间，美国的电视研究者之一，法恩斯沃恩于1927年取得了电子电视系统的专利。
1936年11月2日，在英国伦敦进行了第一次正式的电子电视系统的公开广播试验，当时用的是英国的休恩伯格研制的405行、每秒50帧的隔行电子扫描系统。此系统用的光电摄像管是在英国的麦吉尔领导下研制成功的。当时播放的电视图像的清晰度远远超过了机械扫描的电视，至此，电子黑白电视时代就开始了。
