In this paper I will argue that the witchcraft beliefs of one contemporary West African community are evolving into a medium for interpreting and acting upon grievances that originate in the external social environment. Although anthropologists have long known and frequently demonstrated that witchcraft beliefs function to air and resolve interpersonal conflicts in small-scale communities, they have given little systematic thought to the
functions of witchcraft beliefs in a context characterized by intersocietal domination. I am suggesting that, in this context, where the traditional small-scale community has become a part society within a large-scale social system, witchcraft beliefs may function to divide those who are already weak by providing them with a framework for attributing selected external social experiences (specifically powerlessness and formal and informal exploitation)to immediate interpersonal causes.
