On the whole, ambitious students are more likely to succeed in their studies than are those with little ambition.
为什么“than are those”里还要有个“are”？而不是直接than those呢？这涉及到什么语法知识呢？

这涉及到了语法的一致性。这个问题问的很好，即使是外国人也常出错。 考虑下面我造的句子;
I am more successful than my friends are.
I have been more consistent at volunteering than my friends have been.
I make more money than he does.
这三个短句子都保持了主谓的一致性。 i am， they are. i have, they have, I do, he does.
都是书面的语法，对话的时候没有多大的讲究。

英语当中的比较级必须是同类比较:也就是说人和人比较,物和物比较
这句话里面实际上是those (students) are with little ambition,than实际上是个连词，在这种句型之中，有时候主谓需要倒装，所以是than are those.
这句话的意思是：总的来说，那些有抱负的学生要比那些没什么抱负的学生更了能在学业上成功。
