语法问题，请高手帮忙解答

Computers are a relatively new invention. The first computers were built fifty years ago and it is only in the last thirty or so years that their influence has affected our everyday life. Personal computers were introduced as recently as the early eighties.（前两句是什么意思？真没看懂） In this short time they have made a tremendous impact on our lives. We are now so dependent on computers that it is hard to imagine what things would be like today without them. You have only got to go into a bank when their main computer is broken to appreciate (这词在这什么意思？) the chaos that would occur if computers were suddenly removed world-wide.

It has been known for some time now that(啥意思) a move towards sources of energy which are not carbon-based is urgently required to stop the effects of global warming. In my view, there are too few governments who seem to be promoting (怎么用be doing 为什么？ 直接to promote不行吗？) the use of other types of energy such as wind, wave, solar and nuclear sources of energy.
