为什么 这里many后面可以跟a?

many a 是一个短语，表示很多的意思，但后面的词用单数，谓语动词也用单数例如
Many a boys is playing football now.很多孩子在踢足球。

many a + 单数名词= many+复数名词

不为什么，就像a lot of 一样，你能说lot 后面为什么加 of 吗
