当时处于维多利亚时期，世俗观念，等级门第观念，金钱至上，人们的精神受到强烈的压抑。《呼啸山庄》的女主人公凯瑟琳——一个庄园小姐不顾门第爱上一个野气十足的弃儿，把一腔热血献给没有财产，没有地位的仆役。但她反叛的不够彻底。一度曾受到蒙蔽和虚荣心的驱使，嫁了一个自己不爱的人，并天真地希望用丈夫的钱去帮助自己的情人。一开始，她的婚姻便是一个悲剧，直到她痛苦悔恨而死。
