节点是在城市环境中观察者能够由此进入的具有战略意义的点，是人们往来行程的集中焦点。它们是连接点，交通线路中的休息站，道路的交叉或汇聚点，从一种结构向另一种结构的转换处，也可能只是简单的聚集点，由于是某些功能或物质特征的浓缩而显得十分重要，比如街角的集散地或是一个围合的广场。某些集中节点成为一个区域的中心和缩影，其影响由此向外辐射，它们因此成为区域的象征与核心。

标志物是另一类型的点状参照物，与节点不同的是，观察者只是位于其外部，而并未进入其中。标志物通常是一个定义简单的有形物体，比如建筑、标志、店铺或山峦，也就是在许多可能元素中挑选出一个突出元素。有些标志物相距甚远，通常从不同的方位，掠过一些低矮建筑物的顶部，从很远处都能看得见，形成一个环状区域内的参照物，大厦的尖顶或山上的孤塔。其它的标志物主要是地域性的，只能在有限的范围、特定的道路上才能看到，比如那些数不清的广告牌、商店立面、植物，甚至是橱窗模特之类的城市环境细部。
在现实中，这些体验元素并不是一成不变的。处于不同的观察环境中，某个特定客观事物的形态体验类型偶尔也会发生改变。公路对司机来说是道路，而对行人来说可能是边界；一个中等规模城市的中心区可能是一个区域，而对于整个大都市地区来说，它只是一个节点。这些元素类型也不会孤立存在，区域由节点组成，由边界限定范围，通过道路在其间穿行，并四处散布一些标志物，元素之间有规律地互相重叠穿插，最终必将重新统一成一个整体环境体验。
