Sampling and analytical procedures
O2 and pH were measured in the river and floodplain water with a YSI 51B and an ORION 250A meter,respectively. Inorg-N and o-P were measured in the river and the floodplain marsh water, and in the interstitial water of the marsh sediment. River and marsh waters were sampled by triplicate and results are given as the mean of the three values. Samples were in situfiltered through Whatman GFC filters. Nutrient concentrations in pore water were assessed by means of a multiple dialysis chamber (‘peeper’, Hesslein, 1976).This consisted of a Plexiglass block (2X15X45 cm)in which small chambers were machined at a resolution of 1 cm, and covered with a biologically inert polysulphone membrane (Gelman DM-200, 0.2 m pore size) protected by a Plexiglass sheet with apertures matching the chambers.
