To test for organic, use a 12 fl oz clear-glass bottle available at any drugstore. Fill the bottle to the 41/2 –oz mark with the sand to be tested. Add to this a 3% solution of sodium hydroxide in water until the volume of the sand and liquid, indicated after shaking, is 7 fl oz. (The caustic solution can be made by adding 1 oz of sodium hydroxide to 1 qt of water. ) Stopper the bottle, shake vigorously, and allow it to stand for 24 hours. If there are no organic substances present, the liquid above sample will be clear or nearly so. Slightly straw-colored liquid is not objectionable. Beyond this stage the liquid begins to take on the color of tea, light to very dark. A light, weak tea color is the border line for acceptable use of the tested sand. Shades darker than this indicate higher-than-acceptable percentages of organic matter in the sand, and such sand should not be used in concrete.
