汽车工业是山东省七大产业链之一。近年来，山东省按照整车与原材料同步推进、整车与零部件协调配套、龙头企业与一般企业共同发展的思路，以汽车、改装车、摩托车、农用车和汽车零部件五大类产品为主攻方向，逐步发展成为全国汽车行业产品门类最全的省份。目前，全省有汽车整车企业16户，改装车企业79户，摩托车企业16户，轻型汽车（农用车）企业23户，汽车零部件企业500多户。
按照国家政策优化产业结构，山东省汽车产业集群的集聚效应逐步显现。山东省经贸委发布的信息显示，目前全省汽车行业共有规模以上汽车和零部件工业企业652家，整个产业年可创造产值1500亿元以上，初步形成了济南、青岛、烟台、潍坊、日照、济宁等六大汽车产业集群。
济南的重型卡车及配套，青岛的中重型载货车、专用车及配件，潍坊的柴油机及配件，日照的低速载货车，济宁的改装车及配套都已经形成了区域产业集群。其中，烟台汽车产业以通用东岳汽车为龙头，丛林集团、只楚集团、泰利公司等零部件企业为其配套，目前整个链条配套企业已达70多个。
因为政策调控，山东省加大产业结构调整力度，有力促进了行业的良性发展。2006年，五征、时风相继通过了国家轻型汽车生产准入，完成了全省重点农用车生产企业向轻型汽车的转化。同时，重汽、通用东岳等整车生产企业加大技改投入和新产品开发，在行业竞争中优势凸显。目前，通用东岳产品已达5个系列22个车型，产量已占到上海通用总量的1/3。
