John Donne (1572-1631), the most influential poet of English metaphysical school of poetry, is recognized as one of the greatest poets in the world’s literature. However, his greatness was a discovery of the twentieth century after over two hundred years of neglect. He came from a London merchant family. After being at Oxford and Cambridge University, where as a Catholic he could not take a degree, Donne entered Lincoln’s Inn, in 1592, to study law. Although no longer being a Catholic, he had not become an Anglican; for many years he was Christian of no particular church. After joining naval expeditions to Cadiz (1596) and the Azores (1597), Donne entered the service of Sir Thomas Edgerton. In 1601, he secretly married Anne More, daughter of Edgerton’s brother-in-law. As a consequence, he was dismissed by Edgerton and for many years lost his chances of advancement to a government appointment.
