那是一个新年的晚上。一位老人正站在窗边。他抬起他那双悲伤的眼睛望向那点缀着像平静湖面上的百合一般的星星的深蓝色天空。他转向地面，那里有一些比他还要绝望的人正走向他们的终点——坟墓。他已经在这条路上走了六十年了，在他的旅途中他所收获的只有错误和懊悔。现在，他的身体已不再健康，他的思想已经空虚，他的心中满怀着悲伤，他的老年生活也不安宁。
他青年的时光像梦一样浮现在他的面前，他回想起他的父亲将他带向两条路的交叉口的那一刻：一条路通向一个宁静的、充满阳光的地方，那里到处是鲜花和果实，人们唱着柔美的歌；另一条路通向一个幽黑的无底洞，毒药在那里肆意流淌，魔鬼和毒蛇在里面发出咝咝声，四处爬行。
他仰望蓝天，悲痛地叫道：“回来！我的青春！父亲！请再一次将我带到那路口，我一定会选择那条充满阳光的路！”但他的青春已经和他的父亲一样逝去了。
