以前人们常认为俚语来源于社会下层，带有一些粗俗的含义，包括行话，术语，黑话等，而今随着社会的发展，俚语又有一种欲登大雅之堂的趋势，所以俚语就成为人们争论较多的一类语言。有人认为俚语使语言生动，形象化，有人却认为俚语正在毁灭语言。但是观察今日英语变化所得出的结论之一是，越来越多的俚语正进入标准英语的范畴，它随着社会的发展而不断发展，丰富，不仅词汇的数量在增多，而且使用的范围也扩大了。编撰第一部英语辞典的Dr.Samuel Johnson(1709-1784)在1755年还认为类似于Fisky,gambler,conundrum一类的俚语词要杜绝使用。而如今，谁也不会因为别人使用这些词而感到奇怪了.因为时代在变化，而且变化如此之快，以至俚语这个词本身也许在不久的将来消失的无影无踪。例如，hip一字，出于美国“垮掉的一代”在那时还显得非常粗俗和怪癖，而如今却作为hep 变体出现在merriam-websterd 的third international之中，也不再标注俚语。
语言作为一种社会现象，要与他的社会背景相适应，美国俚语作为一种交际工具，它要服务于它的社会基础。
随着社会的发展，有些俚语就会退出历史舞台，有些俚语或作为他用，或精心打扮，改头换面，有些俚语或进入正式语中，而有些俚语则会随着社会的变革以及时代的需要，会雨后春笋般的产生和成长。我们把went worth 和flexner的dictionary of American(1960) 同merriam-webster的third international(1961)做一比较不难发现，前者开列了2355个俚语词，而后者在同意其词义的前提下，只将其中的549 个列为俚语，一年中就有如此多的俚语加入到标准语的行列，足够的事实证明俚语的发展正趋向规范化，大众化。
