国外直接投资给发展中国家从三方面带来效益，它们是资本的转化，技术的转化，管理技能的转化，这些即为资源转化效益的主要内容。
资本
国外直接投资能给发展中国家带来更多的资金。当一个国家想得到更多的资金来发展本国经济是有2种选择，一是从国际组织如世界银行、国际货币基金组织或者其他国家、个人借钱，被称做外债。另外一种方法就是吸引跨国公司到这个国家去投资。如果这个国家选择了来钱快的方式，那么这个国家将面临风险，因为这些外债会给国内经济带来沉重的负担，有时外债会给国内经济带来严重的后果。
但是利用国外直接投资，发展中国家能突破这个恶性循环还不用增加外债。因为低廉的劳动力成本和丰富的自然资源，跨国公司乐于将制造业搬到发展中国家。当这些设备和工厂的分厂建到这些国家的时候，资本转化成发展国家的动力。
技术
跨国公司通过直接投资能给发展中国家带来先进技术或者知道怎么去用这些技术。技术是经济增长的重要因素，这也是发展中国家的弱势。发展中国家没有能力去研发新技术。通过国外直接投资，它们能节约大量的资源，时间和钱，同时还能赶上发达国家的步伐；通过用这些技术，它们的经济能得到快速发展。跨国公司通常拥有整合生产过程和生产产品的先进技术，当它们转移工厂到这些国家，技术也被转移到了这些国家。因此发展中国家可以以比自己来研究的更低的代价来获取先进技术。
