Instead of growing solid solution Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 films, strained SrTiO3/BaTiO3
superlattices have been prepared recently by PLD (Tabata, et al., 1994, 1995). To
prepare SrTiO3/BaTiO3 superlattice, an ArF excimer laser with an energy fluence of
0.5–1 J/cm2 was focused onto the target of BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 alternately to deposit
desired materials. The most interesting observations from this experiment are the
following: (1) the superlattice shows very different electric/dielectric behavior from that
of the solid solution of Ba0.5Sr0.5TiO3 films; (2) lattice stress can be introduced at the
interface by such a superlattice (see Fig. 7.15); and (3) the expansion of the BaTiO3
layer in the c direction enhances the dielectric constant. In other words, the superlattice
structure and the stress caused at the interface between the SrTiO3 and BaTiO3 layers
play an important role in the enhancement of the dielectric constant.
