其实，牛仔裤虽然产生于美国，但并不是牛仔们的最先发明，也不是牛仔最典型的服装。当年牛仔的形象是：头戴墨西哥式宽边高顶帽-—牛仔帽，身穿短紧身、口袋多、紧束袖的牛仔衣；颈围鲜艳的大方巾；足蹬长筒皮靴——牛仔靴。而今日流传最广的是牛仔裤。
牛仔曾被誉为当年西进运动中的“马背英雄”。他们是一群勇敢、耐劳、机敏、富有开拓精神的劳动者。为了劳动的需要，牛仔服使应运而生。它的最大特点是坚固、多用。牛仔帽白天可以遮烈日风雨，休息时可以折起来当枕头，渴了还可以卷起来舀水狂饮：牛仔衣穿上方便利落，口袋可装很多东西；高统靴不伯泥泞载道。

对牛仔来说，印花大方巾的用途实在太广泛了。他们清晨去水塘边洗脸可用来擦脸；套马时可用来当马的蒙眼布；为小牛烙标记时可用来拴小牛的双腿；入夏可以遮挡阳光；冬季可以防止冻伤；骑马奔跑时，可以用来遮住口鼻，遮挡尘土；饮水时，可以把大方巾盖在水面上，隔而饮之，起过滤作用。牛仔们还把大方巾用作接杯盘的毛巾、互相联络的信号以及受伤时的绷带。他们习惯于每到一个水塘总要把大方巾洗干净，然后拿在手中或顶在头上，骑马走着，让风吹干。遇到天气炎热．他们还把湿方巾围在帽子下解暑。
