A prototype non-circular turning machine with a AMC-40A20 PWM power amplifier and a programmable multi-axis controller (PMAC) has been built for NCTP [3]. The machine was built as part of the NIST — Advanced Technology Program project, conducted by Saginaw Machining .Systems, Inc. and the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign. A schematic diagram of the voice-coil actuator drive [2] is shown in Fig. 1. For low friction tool actuation, the tool slide is mounted on Rulon-LR bearing. Synchronization between tool actuation and workpiece rotation is maintained via a rotary encoder. The voice coil motor components include a permanent magnet and an electric coil attached to the slide bar, powered by the power amplifier. A laser position sensor and retro-reflector mounted on the slide bar are employed for the position feedback. The acceleration measurements are provided by a piezoelectric accelerometer bonded to the tool slide bar.
