近几年，新兴的污水处理厂中存在着一些问题，污水处理操作工由于经验的不足，经常会造成污水处理过程中的一些故障，导致运行效率低下，开工率也受到了影响，而污水处理成本却大幅提高。其原因是这些经验的积累要求具有较长时间的实际操作经验和广泛的知识，所以只有少数专家掌握。因此十分有必要推出一套用于指导城市污水处理厂日常运行的决策支持系统，对操作工进行专家系统专家经验的指导。因此开发专家系统故障诊断系统对污水处理有着十分重要的作用。
日常城市城市污水处理的工艺十分复杂，可分为预处理工艺、一级处理工艺、二级处理工艺、深度处理工艺和污泥处理工艺，以及最终的污泥处置。而且其具有着高度非线性，非稳态特性和时变特性、缺乏有效测量手段或检测设备的不足、大延迟和滞后特性等特点。本文以污水处理工艺为背景，主要研究一下几点内容：
（1）污水处理过程工艺的知识获取，其获取的知识主要包括污水处理过程的故障现象、故障原因和解决策略。
（2）污水处理过程工艺的知识表示，本系统的知识表示方法采用产生式规则表示法。
（3）污水处理过程故障诊断专家系统推理，主要是基于CLIPS的不确定推理。
（4）污水故障诊断专家系统的开发，主要是利用专家系统开发工具CLIPS。
本文在Windows XP平台为背景，开发了污水处理故障诊断专家系统的专家系统模块开发。该专家系统采用模块化的设计方法，实现了知识库与推理机的分离。通过模拟测试表明，系统具有较高的诊断性能。
