Extinction of statehood
It is controversial to the topic of extinction of statehood. Extinction of state-hood does emerge as a consequence of merger, dissolution, adoption and annexation. However, such action is conditioned by international law, and takes place within a certain framework. Several examples may be noted. On October 3, 1990 the German Democratic Republic reunified with the Federal Republic of Germany under the agreement between the two sides. The two states merged to one. By contrast, the dissolution of Czechoslovakia on January 1, 1993 led to the birth of two new states of Czech Republic and Slovakia. These two specific examples can well illustrate the dismemberment of existing states through merger or dissolution.
