1.1. Definitions
Our research questions contain three core terms: SME, international business and
e-commerce. SMEs are defined here as firms with 500 or fewer employees, though as
described below, the companies we studied are mostly very small, with 10 or fewer workers.
Our paper defines international business as transactions made in markets outside the
firm’s home country. We studied 12 Canadian firms who do business with Japan or, in the
case of a start-up, is considering doing business there. Japan was selected because it is not
part of the North American Free Trade Agreement, and is a distant and truly foreign market
for Canadians.
We define e-commerce as business activity conducted using websites on the Internet. This
is a subset of e-commerce as defined by the OECD: ‘‘...all business occurring over networks
using the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)’’ (OECD, 1998). We
