“竟”字作为一个虚词，在《红楼梦》中出现频率非常高。全书80万字，其中“竟”字共出现了641次，每万字达8次。而且“竟”的各种繁复的意义在书中几乎都有反映。本文拟用比较法，通过对“竟”在《红楼梦》（近代汉语运用的典范）中的用法分别与在《史记》（古代汉语运用的典范）和《阿Q正传》（现代汉语白话文运用的典范）中的用法作比较，来梳理一下“竟”字各个义项的演变发展情况 。

The Chinese character "indeed" used as a form word give a very frequent appearance in the novel 《A Dream of Red Mansions》. For a 800,000 words book, this "indeed" was use for 641 times in total
, 8 times per ten thousand words. And almost all the diverse meanings of this "indeed" had been indecated in the book. In this article， all the semantic meanings of this character "indeed" and their evolution by ages shall be systematismed by compare with the different way it was use in 《A Dream of Red Mansions》(typical near age Chiness)and 《Shih Chi》(typical old Chinese),and also with the《The True Story of Ah Q》(typical modern age Chinese).
