“德育”，顾名思义，是“道德教育”的简称。西方国家的“德育”的确指的是道德教育，而我国则认为这只是狭义的德育，广义的德育则包括道德教育、政治教育、思想教育，甚至还包括心理教育、法制教育等等。我们知道，人类最初的道德规范同其他社会意识方面的规范是浑然一体，融于习俗之中的。西方“德育”一词原意即近于习俗，因此道德教育最初即为“习俗教育”，也即“社会意识教育”。到了近代，西方社会随着生产领域及社会生活领域的分化，社会关系日趋复杂化，浑然一体的社会意识渐次分化，形成政治、法律、宗教、道德等相对独立的社会意识形态。道德规范成为独立的社会意识形态后，一方面同政治规范、法律规范、宗教规范并存，另一方面又渗透着政治、法律、宗教的成分，与此相应，西方的道德教育，一方面从社会意识教育中独立出来，与政治教育、法制教育、宗教教育相互并行，另一方面又不可避免地渗透着政治、法律、宗教教育的成分。中国则不然。我国古代就以“道德”囊括各种社会意识，近代社会意识虽在分化中，但分化不充分，传统影响甚大，以致至今仍以“德育”包容整个社会意识形态的教育。
