春秋时期的燕国人羊角哀和左伯桃，不仅是好朋友，而且都是品德高尚、有才华的人。因听说楚庄王是一个明君，他俩一同到楚国去寻找施展自己才干的机会，解救人民于水火之中。不料在路途中遇到暴风雪，陷于茫茫荒原。寒冷、饥饿使左伯桃病倒了，羊角哀说：“要死就死在一块，我扶你走吧！”两天后，羊角哀也精疲力竭了，好不容易才把左伯桃扶到一棵两人合抱的空心树下，暂避风雨。左伯桃气喘吁吁地说：“兄弟，荒原千里，风雪无边，与其两人冷饿而死，不如救活一个。”羊角哀说：“你放心，我背也要把你背到楚国去。”左伯桃举起双手，搭在羊角哀的双肩上深情地说：“你的心意我领了，救民于水火之中是我俩的共同理想，不论这个理想是咱俩共同实现，还是你一个人去实现，都算达到目的了，你说是不是？”两人真诚相让，最后还是左伯桃说服了羊角哀。羊角哀到楚国见到楚王后，立即带人回到荒原。这时左伯桃已冻死在空树洞里。他埋葬了朋友的尸体，痛哭而别。每逢左伯桃的忌日，羊角哀总是朝着左伯桃遇难的荒原方向深深一拜，心中默默祷告：“伯桃，我一定要实现咱俩的理想。”
