I want this afternoon to take up a problem we have already met in considering the history of science and the history of philosophy. Every piece of historical writting purports to be a certain sort of enquiry about some not yet understood passage of past human engagement. In it a subject of enquiry is provisionally identified: thus, the conquest of Peru, the reformation in Zurich, Elizabethan drama, the scientific revolution, or Jerusalem under high priests. And it is identified as a subject of historical enquiry.
